In sports, the secret to success is talent. This is common knowledge. Every single person affiliated with a sports business from the GM to the guy who cleans the toilets to the most casual fan is perfectly well aware of this.
Right now in the NBA, the Cleveland Cavaliers are feverishly trying to amass the talent it will take them and Labronn James to win a championship, and the MLB Detroit Tigers just added the third Cy Young award winner to its pitching staff. This stuff goes on all the time as teams jockey one another for the best talent. These moves are more important to a team’s chances than anything. People win championships, uniforms and facilities don’t.
Considering how obvious this is in sports, it’s eerily confusing how the secret to success became so elusive in every other kind of business. It is so elusive an entire industry of consultants sprung up to help businesses find their way.
Jorge Brito, CEO of AB Inbev, spoke at Stanford about this topic. If you’ve been following for any time, you probably know I’m a big fan of 3G Capital and the Brazilian trio. AB Imbev is one of their companies, and Jorge Brito illuminated some of the driving characteristics of their operating system.
